ビョークやIVEといった世界的アーティスト、さらには名だたるラグジュアリーブランドからオファーが殺到する、今、世界で最も注目されているネイリスト・ともにゃんことTomoya Nakagawaさん。東京都出身で、現在はニューヨークを拠点に活動する彼の作品は、立体的で独自の世界観を放ち、世代を問わず多くの人々を魅了している。
そんな彼には、驚きの過去がある。実はネイリストになる以前、和歌山で漁師として働いていたのだ。海と共に生きていた彼が、いかにしてアートの世界へと羽ばたき、世界からラブコールを受けるネイルアーティストへと進化を遂げたのか。その軌跡を辿る。

原点は「偶然」から。指先の“おもちゃ箱”
先日、スニーカーショップ「atmos pink」で開催されたNIKE「エア ジョーダン」ウィメンズモデルに合わせたワークショップのために帰国。約30名が参加し、オリジナルチャーム作りを体験。「可愛い！」「大切にします!! 」といった声が多く寄せられた。「参加者それぞれが異なるテイストを持っていて、僕の世界観に共鳴してくれたのが嬉しかったです」と彼は語る。
「場所が変われば、人も変わる。そこに希望がある」そう語るTomoyaさんの歩みは、まさに転機の連続だった。
「将来 “有名になりたい” という気持ちはなかったです。10代の頃からファッションが好きで、将来はアパレル業やスタイリストになりたいと思っていました。実はネイルスクールにも通ったことがあるのですが、座学が苦手で、すぐにやめてしまったんです」
20代では、アパレルスタッフ、フレグランス会社勤務を経て、独立。斬新なコンセプトで話題となった浮き輪ブランド「プカプカ」を立ち上げた。当時ブームだったナイトプールや“インスタ映え”の流れにも後押しされ、瞬く間に人気が爆発した。
その後、飲食店勤務を経て、和歌山に移住。漁師としての生活が始まった。
NY、そしてネイルとの出会い
ネイルとの出会いはNYにあった。
もともとはパートナーがネイリストとして活動していたが、コロナ禍をきっかけにTomoyaさん自身もネイルにのめり込むように。
「当時、和歌山で漁師をしていたのですが、NYに渡り、ロックダウン中の静かな時間に自分の爪をケアし始めました。最初はただの趣味で、遊び感覚でした。パートナーが持っていたジェルやパーツ、ストーンなどが一通り揃っていたので、まるでおもちゃ箱を与えられた子どものように夢中になっていましたね」
ネイルの知識はパートナーから教わった。「ネイルは、ベース、カラー、トップコートだけで終わると思っていたら、下処理が想像以上に多くて驚きました」と当時を振り返る。
アートの経験があったわけではないが、昔から絵を描くのが好きだったという。「気づいたら、キャンバスが爪になっていたんです」
ある日、スーパーマーケットで店員に「そのネイル、可愛いね。どこでやったの？」と声をかけられ、「自分でやりました」と返すと「すごい！私にもやって！」と（笑）。ネイルを通じて人とつながる喜びを感じた瞬間だった。
SNSに投稿すると、反響は大きく、フォロワー数が急増。「それが楽しくて、どんどん自分の好きな個性的なアートを追求していきました」

立体ネイルと “偶然のひらめき”
「アートを一通りやり尽くしたと感じた頃、次は立体的な表現がしたくなって、クリアジェルを“ビヨーン”と伸ばして硬化させてみたら、どうなるんだろう？ と思いトライしてみると、思いのほか面白いものができあがって」
そんな偶然がきっかけで、立体アートを追求することに夢中に。練習を重ねるうちに自由自在に形を操れるようになり、海外のフォロワーや関係者から「アイディアが面白い！」と反響を得るように。
そして、ビョークのスタイリストの目に留まり、ロンドン発のカルチャーマガジン『i-D』のカバー用のネイルアーティストへと抜擢。夢のような展開が現実となった。
漁師の経験が今につながる
「魚の光り方や質感、生き物の動き、自然の風景……、そのすべてが今の表現につながっています」
和歌山・串本町で過ごした漁師時代は、彼のアーティストとしての感性を豊かにした。その後、パートナーと共に3D CADを学び、ネイルパーツ設計を開始。たちまちSNSでも話題となり、世界中のクリエイターから注目されるように。
2024年5月からは、NYの人気ネイルサロン「Vanity Projects（バニティ・プロジェクツ）」に所属。サロンワークの傍ら、アーティストとしても活躍中。ビョークをはじめ、スウィーティー、リル・ナズ・X、バッド・バニー、アリシア・キーズなど、名だたるアーティストの作品も手がけている。
サロンでの日々、そして未来へ
「最初はマイアミ店での10日間のテストワークから始まりました。とても大変でしたが、ようやく楽しさを感じられるようになってきました。そんな『Vanity Projects』では、アートが好きな方、アートに自信のある日本人ネイルアーティストを募集しています。VISAサポート体制も整っているので、海外で挑戦したい方にはぴったりの環境です。ぜひ一緒にお仕事できる日を楽しみにしています！」
現在はワンカラーからミドルティアアートまで施術可能に。英語力も独学とオンラインで磨き、日々勉強中とか。
「ネイルは、僕にとって“生きる希望”です。進化し続ける業界の中で、自分もその一員でいられることが嬉しいんです」
最後に、これからの世代へこうメッセージを送る。
「好きなことをとことん追求していれば、いつかそれが仕事につながる日が来るかもしれません。もし壁にぶつかったら、一度立ち止まってみてください。そして、もう一度だけ、自分にチャンスをあげてほしい。できなかったことが、ある日ふっとできるようになる瞬間がきっとあります。『諦めも肝心』とは言いますが、諦めずに続けていると、これまで見たことのないステージが待っています」
日々の経験と想像がアートへ昇華される。これからも、ともにゃんの唯一無二のアートが、世界中を魅了し続ける。

“Tomonyan” Tomoya Nakagawa—A Singular Nail Artist Blossoming in NYC
Tomoya Nakagawa—affectionately known as “Tomonyan”—is currently the world’s most buzzed-about nail artist, receiving offers from global icons like Björk and IVE, as well as prestigious luxury brands. Born in Tokyo and now based in New York, his creations captivate people of all ages with their three-dimensional artistry and unique aesthetic.
What’s even more surprising is his past: before becoming a nail artist, he worked as a fisherman in Wakayama. Living in harmony with the sea, he ultimately found his way into the art world, evolving into a nail artist beloved around the globe. Let’s trace that remarkable journey.From “Chance” to a Fingertip “Toy Box”
Recently, Tomoya returned to Japan to host a workshop at atmos pink, tied to the release of the women’s “Air Jordan” from Nike. About 30 participants came to design their own charms, with many exclaiming, “It’s so cute!” and “I’ll treasure it!” He shared, “Each participant brought their own style, and hearing them resonate with my world was truly rewarding.”
He believes, “Change locations, change people. That brings hope,” and his career has indeed been a series of turning points.
“I never had dreams of becoming famous. Ever since my teens, I’ve loved fashion and wanted to work in apparel or become a stylist. I even enrolled in a nail school at one point, but I struggled with the theory—it wasn’t for me, so I quit quickly.”
In his twenties, he worked in apparel and fragrance companies before launching his independent venture—a buoyant float brand called “Pukapuka.” Riding the trend of night pools and Instagrammable aesthetics, it swiftly became a hit. After stints in the food industry, he relocated to Wakayama and began his life as a fisherman.
From NY—and Discovering Nails
His encounter with nail art happened in New York. His partner was already a practicing nail artist, and during the pandemic Tomoya himself became deeply interested.
“I was working as a fisherman in Wakayama, then moved to NY. During lockdown, I started caring for my own nails—initially just for fun. With all the gels, parts, and stones my partner had, it felt like a toy box—and I became completely absorbed.”
He learned the basics from his partner.
“I thought nail art was just base, color, and top coat—but there’s a surprising amount of prepping involved,” he recalls.
Though he had no formal training in art, he had always enjoyed drawing.
“Before I knew it, my canvas became my nails.”
One day, a supermarket employee admired his nails:
“‘Your nails are so cute! Where did you get them done?’ ‘I did them myself.’ ‘Wow! Can you do mine too?’” It was a moment of connection through nail art. Posting on social media gained him rapid attention and followers.
“I enjoyed that so much, I dove deeper into pursuing unique art.”
3D Nail Art and “Accidental Inspiration”
“Once I felt I’d explored flat art thoroughly, I wanted to try three-dimensional expression. I wondered, ‘What if I stretch clear gel and cure it?’ I tried it, and the results were more intriguing than I imagined.”
That happy accident launched him into the realm of 3D art. With repeated practice, he learned to manipulate shapes with ease. International followers and industry professionals responded with admiration: “Your ideas are incredible!” His work caught the eye of Björk’s stylist and led to his appointment as the nail artist for the cover of London-based culture magazine i-D. A dream come true.
From Fisherman to Artistic Visionary
“The shimmer of fish, textures, animal movements, natural landscapes… it all continues to inform my current expression.”
His time as a fisherman in Kushimoto, Wakayama, deeply enriched his artistic sensibility. Later, he and his partner studied 3D CAD to design his own nail parts, instantly drawing attention on social media from creators around the world.
In May 2024, he joined the popular NYC salon Vanity Projects. Alongside salon work, he continues his artistic endeavors. His client list includes heavyweight names such as Björk, Sweetie, Lil Nas X, Bad Bunny, and Alicia Keys.
Life at the Salon and Future Outlook
“It all began with a 10-day trial work period at our Miami location. It was incredibly tough at first, but I’ve finally started to enjoy it. At Vanity Projects, we’re seeking Japanese nail artists who love art and have confidence in their artistic abilities. Our visa support system is fully in place, so it’s an ideal environment for those who want to challenge themselves abroad. We look forward to working with you someday!”
Nowadays, he offers services ranging from simple one-color designs to mid-tier art. He’s also been improving his English through self-study and online classes.
“For me, nail art is ‘hope for living.’ It makes me so happy to be part of an ever-evolving industry.”
Finally, he offers words of encouragement for the next generation:
“If you devote yourself to what you love, someday it might become your work. If you hit a wall, take a pause. Then give yourself just one more chance. There’ll come a day when something you couldn’t do suddenly becomes possible. ‘Knowing when to let go’ is important—but if you keep going, a stage you’ve never seen before will be waiting.”
Everyday experiences and imagination are transformed into art. Tomonyan’s one-of-a-kind creativity will continue to captivate the world.
